The reader in this video is operating in local mode The design of the punch mechanism after the reader allowed cards to be read and then punched before ending up in the output bin. The 1130 could also use another popular card reader, the IBM 2501, which could read cards much faster at 600 to 1000 cards per minute and for some configurations both a 2501 and 1442 were fitted. 2019-06-03 IBM 2501 Card Reader, Models Al and A2, GA26-5892 • Physical Planning Specifications IBM 1130 Installation Manual–Physical Planning, GA26-5914 IBM 1130 Physical Planning Template, GX26-5997 • Programming Systems–General IBM 1130 Card/Paper Tape … Card Reader - IBM Punch Cards. The IBM 2501 is a punched-card reader from IBM with models for the System/360 and System/370 mainframe systems and for the IBM System/360 Model 20, the IBM 1130 and IBM System/3 minicomputers. 2501 models can read 80-column cards at either 600 or 1000 cards per minute (CPM).

Card reading is under direct program control. IBM Punch Cards IBM 026 Card Punch IBM 2501 Card Reader Until the mid-1970s, most computer access was via punched cards. Programs and data were punched by hand on a key punch machine such as the IBM 026 and fed into a card reader like the IBM 2501.

In the process, I learned a lot about the archaic but interesting electromechanical systems used in the card reader. Most of the card reader is mechanical, with belts, gears, and clutches controlling the movement of cards through the mechanism.
